For an exciting, whirlwind trip, Mumbai is a great place to visit, just don’t expect to get much chance to relax!

Mumbai is notoriously busy, with lots going on, and lots to see and do. A city of colonial relics, modern skyscrapers and bustling bazaars and markets, there’s never a dull moment in India’s largest city.

It’s certainly a city of extremes, where extravagant grandeur and poverty lie side by side, but the main attractions include the many museums, galleries, beaches zoos and world class restaurants.

The bazaars and street stalls are a must visit for shopping, and make sure to try some Goan seafood if you get chance.

No matter how you choose to spend your trip to Mumbai, it’ll be one which you never forget, and you’ll perhaps be glad to catch your breath once it’s all over!

Flying to Mumbai from the USA

Here’s everything that you’ll need to know when flying from the US to Mumbai, including which airlines fly there and the entry requirements.

Flight Times

Flight times from the USA to Mumbai will depend upon where you’re flying from, which airline you’ll be traveling with, and if you’ll have to change flights.

There are a few direct flights to Mumbai from the East Coast, which will get you there in around 14-15 hours, although they cost significantly more than indirect flights.

Indirect flights will take anywhere from 18 to 23 hours depending on where you fly from, with stopovers in various locations such as Abu Dhabi, Doha and London Heathrow.

Entry Requirements

In addition to a valid passport, US citizens will also need a valid Indian visa to enter and exit Mumbai.

If you’re planning to visit purely for tourism purposes, for no longer than 30 days, you can apply for an electronic travel authorization in lieu of a tourist visa.

Airlines Which Fly to Mumbai

Air India and United offer direct flights to Mumbai from New York, however, the majority of flights from the US are indirect, using a number of airlines, including the following:

- Qatar Airways
- Etihad
- Jet Airways
- American Airlines
- Delta
- Cathay Pacific

Make sure to get in touch with one of our experienced travel consultants who will help you to find the airline and route which is the easiest for you, and also the best value.

The Airport

India currently only has one major airport, although a second one, the Navi Mumbai International Airport has been approved.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM)

The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is Mumbai’s main airport, and international visitors will arrive into Terminal 2.

From here, your best bet is to get a taxi to the city center, and we recommend taking a prepaid one as opposed to a metered one.

There are buses available but they don’t travel directly to the city center, and while there is a train station nearby, the trains are often overcrowded.
