Before you start planning your trip, here’s everything you’ll need to know when flying to Athens from the USA.
Travelling times vary depending on where in the US you’re flying from. As a guide, from New York to Athens takes around 13 hours, whilst Los Angeles to Athens is around 15 hours.
For entry into Greece, your US passport should have at least six months of remaining validity. You must arrive in the country with proof of sufficient funds and a return airline ticket. A visa is not required.

Athens International Airport (known as Eleftherios Venizelos) is the main airport serving Athens and is located 33km (20.5 miles) from the city. Take Metro Line 3 (Aghia Marina – Douk. Plakentias - Athens International Airport), which connects the Athens airport with the city center. Trains run every 30 minutes, 7 days a week from 6:30am to 11:30pm. The trip from/to the Airport to Syntagma station (Athens center) lasts 40 minutes.
Taxis are also readily available outside of the arrivals terminal, and take 25 minutes to reach the city centre. During the day a taxi will cost you 38€ and around 54€ at night.
