Bangkok is a true feast for the senses, with plenty to see and do, whether you’re visiting the city itself, or using it as a base to further explore Thailand and South-East Asia.

The iconic capital of Thailand, Bangkok is particularly well known for its infamous nightlife, such as the bars of Soi Cowboy, and trendier cocktail bars.

You could even visit Sky Bar, a stunning rooftop bar which you might recognize from The Hangover Part II.

However, there’s also a much calmer and more spiritual side of Bangkok, with lots of temples to visit, such as Wat Arun and Wat Pho, which can be reached by the Chao Phraya river boat, or on a tuk-tuk for something a bit different!

If you do visit any of the temples, do bear in mind that they’re places of worship and that you need to be respectful.

This means that both men and women need to keep their shoulders and legs above the knee covered, and you’ll also need to take your shoes off.

You may not have known that Bangkok is also home to some great shopping, whether it be the small markets such as the Chatuchak Weekend Market, or the large MBK shopping mall.

Flying to Bangkok from the US

Here’s everything you’ll need to know when booking flights to Bangkok from the US, including entry requirements and flight times.

Flight Times

Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from the US to Bangkok, so no matter where you’re flying from, you can expect a fairly long journey.

Depending on where you stop over, flights can take between 20 and 24 hours, with stopovers in cities such as Taipei, Manila, Hong Kong and Doha.

Entry Requirements

US citizens who are visiting Thailand for fewer than 30 days will not require a visa, as long as they are traveling for tourism purposes, although your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into the country.

Those who are traveling for longer than this, or plan to work there will need to apply for a visa, so will need to get in touch with the Royal Thai Embassy.

Airlines That Fly to Bangkok

Although no airlines currently fly directly to Bangkok from the US, there are a number of airlines offering indirect routes, such as…

- China Southern
- Cathay Pacific

The Airport

Bangkok is home to two airports, Don Mueang International (DMK) and the newer Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), however, it’s the latter which flights from the US will arrive at.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

Suvarnabhumi Airport is located about 20.5 miles to the east of central Bangkok and is connected by a high-speed rail link which runs to downtown Bangkok, with six stops in between, with further links to the MRT underground.
