Situated on the north-west coast of the island of Java, Jakarta is truly a city full of surprises, and while it might not be the most obvious vacation destination, those who do choose to visit will find a city with many different facets, and somewhere a bit different from your standard beach break.

Whether it’s the exciting nightlife, the scents and tastes of Chinatown or the museums of Kota (the old city), there’s plenty on offer in this diverse capital and with Javanese, Indian, Chinese and Dutch cultures all calling Jakarta home through the years, the city has become a real melting pot of people.

Jakarta is also a popular destination for backpackers who are heading off to other parts of Indonesia, who will likely stay close to Jalan Jaksa, the backpacker street.

In the Taman Fatahillah square you’ll find the city’s best museums, including the History Museum, Fine Arts Museum and Puppet Museum, and in Merdeka Square, you’ll see the major political buildings such as the Presidential palace and Supreme Court, as well as the Monas column, a national monument.

For shopping, you should head to the south, where you’ll find the upscale shopping malls, and for some adventure, you can catch a ferry out the Thousand Islands, where you can try water sports such as diving and windsurfing.
