Minsk. Perhaps not the obvious choice for a trip away, but to miss it is definitely to miss out. Rebuilt from scratch after the Second World War, Minsk (the capital of Belarus) is a city which enjoys and promotes its own unique identity and quirky take on modern life. Despite its ostentatious boulevards, old style architecture and imposing squares, the Old Town is not that old at all. A sprawling city of nearly 2 million people, Minsk basks in the nostalgia of Stalinist buildings and Soviet parks, which nudge up against contemporary art galleries, chic bars and fantastic local places to eat.

A great way to start your vacation is by discovering the Independence Square with its prominent statue of Lenin. For some of the most picturesque views over the city, then head up to the somewhat futuristic structure of Belarus' National Library. From there you’ll see The Old Town sitting on the eastern side of the Svislach River, which is bordered by Vul Maxima Bahdanovicha. Despite the fact that the original 17th and 18th century houses were actually recreated in the 1980’s, it’s still a wonderful place to take in. Here you’ll also find a wealth of cute little cafés and souvenir shops to buy a memento of your trip.

To escape the hectic bustle of the main square, head across the road from the Museum of the Great Patriotic War where you’ll find a very pretty little park located on the site of a 19th century marketplace. With its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful scenery, don’t be surprised if you even find people playing music here.

When it comes to eating in Minsk, you’ll certainly be spoilt for choice. There’s everything from old-style high end restaurants to Western European-style food outlets and street food. The local cuisine itself tends to lean a lot towards baked meat, mushrooms, soups and thick sauces. It’s well worth getting stuck in to some "hribnoy sup" yourself (mushroom and barley soup), "kolduni" (stuffed meat dumplings) and "golubsty" (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat and rice). An experience in itself!
