The Ukrainian capital city of Kiev is certainly somewhere different and a real adventure too. Golden domes and dominating cathedral spires sit proudly from the wooded hills rising above the beautiful Dnipro River. Picturesque Kiev, with its crowded road network, shopping malls, numerous churches, unique music and buzzing nightlife, has grasped capitalism with both hands whilst still keeping sight of its traditional heritage. Indeed, you can’t fail to miss the enormous Brezhnev-era Motherland statue clutching her sword and shield gazing over the city and its river.

As you stroll down the many winding streets, the striking Soviet architecture blended with orthodox cathedrals and palaces dripping in luxury define the Ukrainian capital. Although recently shaken by political turmoil and associated media scrutiny, Kiev has wholeheartedly connected with everything modernity has to offer and there really is something for everyone. Its mesmerising art and culture, together with delicious food and stunning parkland will keep you busy for days on end, so there’s plenty of time for some rest and relaxation too. Don’t forget to take ride on the funicular train too, an authentic and practical nod to Kiev's historic past. Save your legs by getting on at the Lower station and go up to Andrew's descent to avoid a tiring treck uphill whilst soaking up the fascinating surroundings.

The National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War is also an essential on any Kiev traveller’s list. Achieve a deeper understanding of Kiev’s history and the legacy it has left on the country today. It has both an indoor section and a large outdoor area containing many different monuments and statues. Breath-taking mosaics and frescoes fill this 11th-century cathedral museum which, in addition to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When it comes to dining, bread is a staple in the Ukrainian food culture, along with borshch, a delicious thick red soup made with beetroot. Other local cuisine includes varenyky (large savoury or sweet stuffed dumplings), holubtsi (meat and rice rolled in cabbage leaves topped with tomato sauce) and pelmeny which is ravioli filled with meat. Indeed, if you possess something of a sweet tooth, the food in Kiev will be a real delight. You’ll also find a good variety of international restaurants and bars too, so you certainly won’t go hungry.
